Past: Adolph Sutro had a vision that changed the Comstock Lode forever. His vision transformed mining on the Comstock Lode by addressing one of its most significant challenges—flooding and poor ventilation in the deep mines. His solution was to construct the Sutro Tunnel, a 3.88-mile engineering marvel that provided drainage and fresh air to the mines, dramatically improving safety and efficiency. This innovation not only extended the life of the mines but also set a precedent for large-scale infrastructure projects in the American West, cementing Sutro’s legacy as a pioneer of practical ingenuity during the silver boom.

Present: How You Can Help

The Sutro Tunnel site is a living restoration project. We rely on volunteers' passion to bring this 150-year-old site back to life. Today, that vision lives on through the Friends of Sutro Tunnel. We are a group of dedicated history enthusiasts working together to restore, protect, and share this Nevada engineering marvel. Whether you want to help clear the portal, restore the historic mule barn, or lead visitors through the stories of the "deep mines," there may be a place for you on our team!

Not So Long Ago

Not so long ago, determined workers carved the Sutro Tunnel through solid rock.

Into The Future

Today, the Friends and volunteers of the Sutro Tunnel are carrying that legacy forward by restoring and reawakening this remarkable place.

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

Helen Keller
