While the site is generally closed to the public to ensure its preservation, you can gain exclusive access through our specially curated 2026 programming:
Join the Friends of Sutro Tunnel Charity for a 2.5-hour Guided History Tour led by passionate historic docents, offered twice each month during our open season.
On these engaging public tours, you will:
Guided History Tours take place on the third Wednesday and third Saturday of each month, from spring through late summer.

Private tours are a wonderful option if you’d like a more intimate experience or wish to visit on a day when our regular Guided History Tours are not offered.
To request a private tour, simply click the button below. A Friends of Sutro Tunnel volunteer will be in touch shortly. Please book at least 72 hours in advance.
All tours are subject to site conditions, weather, and volunteer availability.
The Friends of Sutro Tunnel Charity is proud to offer educational school field trips to the Sutro Tunnel & Historic Site in Dayton, NV.
Teach your students about Nevada & American history in a hands-on learning experience on the Site where history was made.
Field trips can be tailored to your timeframe & schedule. We generally recommended allowing 2+ hours for a full tour.
Your Field Trip will include:
- A dedicated historic docent tour guide(s)
- Custom-tailored to your interests & age groups
- Visit to the Sutro Tunnel Museum & Gift Shop
- Access inside the newly-rebuilt entrance to the Sutro Tunnel
- Outdoor bench seating for sack lunch or snack time (Bring snacks or sack lunch from home - not provided) -
Field Trips to the Sutro Tunnel Historic Site are offered free of charge to all schools, classrooms, and home-school students from K-12. Enrolled students are free and a suggested donation of $15 per adult/chaperone/staff is requested.
